7 Ways to Edit Images Using Photoshop

Photoshop is an amazing software for creating graphics and design work. However, it’s also widely known for its great photo editing tools globally. If you are looking to edit images in bulk but don’t know where to start, you have come to the right place. This article shares all the tips and ways to help you edit photos using Photoshop. Whether you want to edit for fun or do some professional work, Photoshop will help you do it all. Let’s get started:

Methods for using Photoshop to Edit Images

  1. Using the Photoshop Layers
Layers in Photoshop give a lot of editing options. They are created on top of each other, just like a stack. You can find layers inside a dedicated panel on Photoshop.

Whenever you open an image, it opens with just the Background layer.

By adding a new layer, you can adjust the picture.

For instance, you can increase exposure on the top of the background layer by adding a new layer.

Create as many layers as you want on top of each other. All the layers are combined to form the final image. You can add more layers to make other adjustments such as saturation, vibrance, etc.

Try to avoid working on the background layer. Because if you, you are modifying the original photo.

The changes made to the background layer would apply to the original photo and won’t be possible to undo.

By creating more layers, you would be able to edit the photos non-destructive manner. You can undo changes whenever you want to go back to the original photo.

You can always create a duplicate first later to protect the original picture. Add more layers on top of it for further edits.

Layers help you to make editable changes that can be undone when needed:

  • Reorganize layers when needed
  • Adjust layer opacity
  • Turn it on or off to see its effect.
  • Delete them to revert to the original image.

2. Editing through Using Adjustment Layers
With adjustment layers, you can modify your images in different ways. There are two ways to create adjustment layers:

  • Click on the layer panel icon and choose the adjustment layer option.
  • The second way is to click on Layers and select the New adjustment layer.

The adjustment layer also appears on top of the existing layer. Modify it through its properties panel. The editing you do would affect all the layers under it.

Some suitable options that affect the tonal range or the color of your photo are Exposure, Curves, Vibrance, or Hue/Saturation.

Different adjustment layer types can make you feel overwhelmed. Focus on the fundamental adjustments to get familiar with Photoshop and learn new ones through experiments.

  1. Select Image Areas with Marquee and Lasso Tools
You can also select specific image areas in Photoshop. This is done using Marquee tools or the Lasso Tool.

The Marquee tool contains a rectangular shape, an elliptical shape, and a single row or column shape.

Select the image area by clicking on the start point and dragging the cursor to the desired point.

Lasso Tool is another way for selecting specific areas in your images.

There are several types of Lasso Tools.

Different types of Lasso tools:
The basic option helps you select areas using a freehand. The polygonal option helps to create edges by clicking points. The Magnetic option is used for selecting an image around the edges.

Magic wand tool is also used for selecting similar big areas. When you click on the spot, it highlights the large areas. This helps to select similar big areas quickly.

Pressing the Shift button would add similar areas to the Magic wand selection. For removing a selection, press Ctrl + D on Windows or CMD + D on Mac.

  1. Masks to Edit a Portion of Your Image
Masks help to make a specific selection for an image. It is used for protection against the editing tools used in the adjustment layer.

Masks are added with adjustment curve options. The mask is a white square lying side by side to the adjustment layer.

Play with white and black colors when working with Masks. White color is an indication of active pixels. It also changes through adjustment layer modifications.

Change the brush size and hardness in the menu by selecting a brush icon.

You can add a mask through a brush tool. Paint in black by adding the mask to hide.

  1. Straighten a Crooked Photo
Use a measuring tool for Straightening an image in Photoshop. It is available under the Eyedropper tool.

Find a line that is crooked in a photo. It might be a horizon, table, or anything. This depends on your image content. Draw a line along with the tool.

Click on one side of the line and drag over the line till the end before clicking again.

Photoshop would Measure this angle about the rest of the photo. Results are available under the options bar menu.

Select image, then Rotate Canvas and Arbitrary to enter the required angle.

Photoshop would fill the measurements with options in the Rotate Canvas Menu. Make sure PS settings are correct. You would get some white canvas alongside the image when straightening it.

Crop the image to remove the unwanted backgrounds etc. Click on a corner of an image and drag to the desired point. Press Enter to crop.

  1. Lighten and Darken specific Parts of Your Image
The Dodge tool can be used to lighten up the image portions. This is handy when editing photos.

Select the icon to choose the toolbar for shadow and mid-tone effects. Photoshop would apply the lighten filter around those areas.

There is another tool named Burn Tool, which is listed under Dodge tool. It also has similar functioning. However, it darkens the image.

  1. Remove Unwanted Objects With Content-Aware
Using Photoshop, you can remove unwanted objects in different ways. The content-Aware option is one of the photo editors’ favourite options.

Select the area you want to edit using a selection tool. Make sure you are not making changes to the adjustment layer when selecting the big image parts. You can also use Lasso Tool.

Go to Edit and then Content-Aware. After selecting the particular region, right-click and select Fill. Use Content-Aware and Normal in Blending. Keep Opacity at 100.

Photoshop fills the void with the content of the surrounding areas. However, this tool doesn’t work great for complex images.
